ANALYSIS

Yeahh... Finally, I finished the book ''Holes''. Holes it's the best novel, I've even read as a school assignment. It's not a childrens book at all. Sure, I don't say the children can't read it. They can and I'm sure they will like and enjoy it, but in my opinion there are topics in the book, which the young adult reader can understand better and be interested in much more than children. Messages about topics are given the reader so well, but not in a boring way.
The book has three stories, one is the Stanley's story ( the main story), second is the Sam and Kate's story, which is about the local history of the Camp Green Lake and the thirth is the Stanley's no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather's story. With a lot of flashbacks these three stories are connected . At first there are a lot of questions, which makes the reader wonder, what will happen next.

Step by step  with these flashbacks everything starts to fit together. If there was just Stanley's story, the novel would be too boring. All the time the kids would dig holes. The writer knows, how to make a story more enjoyable and to give messages without cliches.

What has happened?(Looking Back)

I've recently read the 40th part of the book. Now, I'm writing in this post a short summary about ''What has happened until now?'
Stanley, our unlucky boy, was sent to Camp Green Lake as a punishment, although he was innocent. He was forced there to dig large holes, ''to build a character''.He changed at the camp a lot. He got stronger. He was accepted in a group. It was so important to him, because he had no friends at the school.
He was aware that, the Warden had something to hide. That was the reason, why they were digging holes. While he was digging one of his holes, he found a metal tube with the initials ''KB''. The Warden interested in this tube so much. That means, the Warden was looking for something about Kate Barlow. After a while he got it, ''KB'' was Kate Barlow. It was the famous Kiss'n Kate Barlow's lipstick.
One of the most important things in the book ''Holes'' is the friendship between Stanley and Zero(Hector Zeroni). After Zero escaped from the camp, he got worried, so he ran away too. Luckily he realizes, he is in the same desert,in which his great grandfather could survive thanks to God's Thumb Mountain. They decided to climb to mountain. While they were climbing, Stanley noticed, that he couldn't manage to climb. Stanley carried him to the top of the mountain. Finally they reached there, they found water and a lot of sweet onions.
I have just forty pages to read and I hope it will be end with a happy ending. I don't know, what will happen next, but to my opinion the curse will be broken, because Stanley carried Zero to the mountain and sang the song ''If only, If only''. It reminds me the promise of Stanley's great great grandfathers promise to Madam Zeroni.

STANLEY YELNATS IV - CHARACTER ANALYSIS

                             PART II (Chapter 20-35)
After a while, he gets stronger.Digging holes doesn't hurt him as much as his first days at the camp. He has much more self confident. He doesn't concern himself with the opinions of the other boys. He becomes friends with Zero, who is the least popular kid and the fastest digger at the Camp Green Lake. The other boys think, that Zero has nothing in his head, therefore they call him Zero, but Stanley isn't in the same opinion. He teaches Zero, how to read and write and he realizes, that Zero is a very smart kid. When Zero runs away, Zero doesn't come back to the camp. After two days Stanley gets worried about him, so he goes  after him.

"He tried not to think about Zero. It was too late or either he made it to the god thump or..."

At the beginning of the book Mr.Sir says:''Nobody runs away from here. We don't need a fence. Know why? Because we've got the only water for a hundred miles. You want to run away? You'll be buzzard food in three days.''This shows, how dangerous running from the camp is. Stanley runs away even under this circumstances. Think about, how strong their friendship is.

STANLEY YELNATS IV - CHARACTER ANALYSIS

PART I (Chapter 1-20)
Stanley Yelnats IV is the main character of the book, who has a funny name, which is same spelled from backwards and the forwards. He is so unlucky like the other Stanley Yelnats before him. That’s not the only reason, which makes him unhappy. He is overweight and has no friends. He is bullied at school, especially by Derrick Dunne.

He is very polite and hopeful. He doesn’t want to upset his mother, therefore he doesn’t tell her the reality about the Camp Green Lake. He describes in his letter the Camp Green Lake like a camp, which the children enjoy it. He tells there are a lot of activities like water-ski, swimming etc., but the Camp Green Lake is just a dry, flat wasteland. There is nothing to do except digging large holes ''to build their character.'' Digging holes is so hard for Stanley. He is the slowest digger at Camp Green Lake, but in my opinion he will be physically stronger after all these sufferings.

As a result of having no friends at school, he wants to be accepted there by the other kids. X-Ray is the leader of to group. In order to be a member of the group, he can do everything, what X-Ray wants. If they find something,in which the warden can be interested, they can get a day off. While Stanley is digging, he finds a metal tube. Although Stanley could have got a day off, Stanley gives it to X-Ray.X-Ray gets the day off.Another example, which can be given to Stanley’s try to be accepted, is Stanley's lie about sunflower seeds. Although he didn’t steal them, he takes the blame.
